Prešov, in northeastern Slovakia close to the Carpathian mountains, receives around 700 mm (about 28 inches) of rain a year, more than Bratislava, reflecting its position closer to higher terrain that intensifies rainfall. Summer brings the most intense convective storms, capable of significant local flash flooding in the narrower valleys around the city during the heaviest downpours. Because mountain-adjacent terrain here creates such sharp local variation in rainfall compared with the rest of the country, radar is genuinely more useful than a broad national forecast, particularly for the surrounding rural valleys. The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute operates the national radar network.
