This Privacy Policy explains what information RainyMap (“we”, “us”) collects when you use rainymap.com, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the choices available to you. If you have any questions about this policy, contact us at [email protected].
Who We Are
RainyMap is an independent website providing free real-time weather maps — rain radar, wind, lightning, temperature and air quality — along with forecasts and weather journalism. The site is operated from Latvia. The data controller for the purposes of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) can be reached at the email address above.
Information We Collect
Information you give us
The only information you actively provide is what you choose to send us by email. We use it solely to respond to you and do not add it to any marketing list. RainyMap does not offer user accounts or registration, and comments are disabled across the site.
Location data
Several of our maps include a “Use My Location” button. If you press it, your browser will ask for permission to share your approximate location. If you grant permission, those coordinates are used in your browser to centre the map on you. We do not store your coordinates on our servers, and we do not use them to build a profile of you. You can refuse the request, or withdraw the permission later in your browser settings, and the maps will continue to work normally.
Information collected automatically
Like most websites, we collect limited technical information automatically:
- Analytics data via Google Analytics 4 — pages viewed, approximate location at city or country level, device and browser type, referring website, and time on page. IP addresses are anonymised.
- Server and security logs — our hosting provider and our content delivery network (Cloudflare) record IP addresses and request details to deliver pages, defend against attacks and filter automated traffic.
Cookies and Similar Technologies
Cookies are small files stored by your browser. RainyMap uses them for the following purposes:
- Strictly necessary — required for the site to function and to keep it secure, including Cloudflare’s security cookies.
- Analytics — Google Analytics cookies help us understand which pages are useful and how the site performs.
- Advertising — used to serve and measure advertisements, as described below.
You can block or delete cookies at any time through your browser settings. Blocking analytics or advertising cookies will not stop the maps from working.
Advertising
RainyMap is free to use and is funded by advertising. We use Google AdSense to display advertisements.
- Google, as a third-party vendor, uses cookies to serve ads on this site.
- Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this and other sites on the internet.
- You can opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings.
- You can also opt out of third-party vendor cookies for personalised advertising at aboutads.info/choices or, in Europe, at youronlinechoices.com.
- Google’s own practices are described in the Google Privacy & Terms site.
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, you will be asked for consent before any non-essential advertising or analytics cookies are set, and you may change or withdraw that choice at any time.
Third-Party Services We Use
Our maps and forecasts are built on data and embedded services provided by others. When one of these loads, the provider may receive your IP address and basic technical information, and may set its own cookies. Each operates under its own privacy policy:
- RainViewer — rain radar imagery
- Windy — wind and temperature map layers
- Blitzortung — live lightning detection data
- World Air Quality Index Project (waqi.info) — air quality station data
- Open-Meteo — 7-day forecast data
- OpenStreetMap and CARTO — base map tiles
- Google — Analytics, AdSense and Fonts
- Cloudflare — content delivery and security
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with third parties beyond what is described in this policy.
Legal Basis and Your Rights
Where the GDPR applies, we rely on your consent for analytics and advertising cookies, and on our legitimate interest in operating a secure, functioning website for strictly necessary technical processing.
You have the right to request access to the personal data we hold about you, to request correction or erasure, to object to or restrict processing, to data portability, and to withdraw consent at any time. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your national data protection authority. To exercise any of these rights, email [email protected].
If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information is collected and to request its deletion. We do not sell personal information as defined by the CCPA.
Data Retention
Analytics data is retained by Google according to the retention period set on our property and is aggregated rather than tied to an identifiable individual. Server and security logs are kept for a short period for operational and security purposes. Emails you send us are kept only as long as needed to deal with your enquiry.
Children
RainyMap is a general-audience weather site and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy to reflect changes to the site or to legal requirements. The date at the top shows when it was last revised. Material changes will be reflected on this page.
Contact
Questions about this policy, or about how your data is handled, can be sent to [email protected]. You can also use our contact page.
