Baltimore, on the Chesapeake Bay, receives around 1,120 mm (about 44 inches) of rain a year, fairly evenly spread across the seasons, with both winter nor’easters and occasional tropical remnants from storms tracking up the East Coast contributing to the total. The historic Inner Harbor and low-lying waterfront areas have flooded during major storms when heavy rain combines with storm surge pushed up the Chesapeake Bay. Summer thunderstorms are a separate, faster-developing hazard, capable of flash flooding specific streets within an hour. Because both coastal surge and fast local storms matter here, radar is a genuinely practical everyday tool. NWS Doppler radar KLWX (Sterling, VA) covers the region.
