Iași, in northeastern Romania close to the Moldovan border, receives around 550 mm (about 22 inches) of rain a year, with a clear summer peak from convective thunderstorms typical of the region’s continental climate. The city’s hilly terrain, part of the wider Moldavian Plateau, means rainfall and storm intensity can vary noticeably across relatively short distances. Hail is a recurring risk for the region’s agricultural land during the most severe summer storms. Because Iași sits somewhat apart from Romania’s other major weather-monitoring hubs, radar tracking is a particularly useful independent check on rapidly developing local storms.
