Klaipėda, Lithuania’s only major seaport on the Baltic coast, receives around 700 mm (about 28 inches) of rain a year, somewhat more than inland Lithuania thanks to its direct exposure to weather systems moving in off the Baltic Sea. Coastal storms can bring strong winds alongside heavy rain, and the city’s position on a narrow strip between the sea and the Curonian Lagoon means water levels can rise from multiple directions during the most severe events. As a key maritime hub, sudden weather shifts here carry real operational significance for shipping. Because coastal weather can change quickly, radar tracking is a genuinely practical tool. Lithuania’s Hydrometeorological Service operates the national radar network.
