Limerick sits on the River Shannon, Ireland’s longest river, near where it widens into its estuary on the west coast, and receives around 950 mm (about 37 inches) of rain a year. The Shannon has a history of flooding the city during periods of sustained heavy rain across its wide catchment area, a slower-building risk compared with the frequent, lighter Atlantic showers that define most of Limerick’s day-to-day weather. Because the city faces both this gradual river-flood risk and more routine rainfall, radar is most useful for tracking the immediate, faster-moving rain bands rather than the river’s longer flood cycle. Met Éireann operates Ireland’s national weather radar network.
