Galway, on Ireland’s west coast, is one of the wettest parts of the country, averaging around 1,300 mm (about 51 inches) of rain a year given its direct, unsheltered exposure to Atlantic storm systems rolling in off the ocean. Rain falls frequently through the year with little seasonal variation, and autumn and winter storms can bring particularly heavy, wind-driven rain to the exposed coastal city and surrounding Connacht region. Because Atlantic weather here can shift very quickly, with clear skies often followed within the hour by driving rain off the sea, radar is used routinely by residents planning anything outdoors. Met Éireann operates the national weather radar network covering the west coast.
