Coimbatore sits inland at the base of the Western Ghats in Tamil Nadu, giving it a drier and milder climate than the state’s coastal cities. It receives rainfall from both the southwest and northeast monsoons, but in more modest amounts than either the Ghats to its west or the coast to its east, since the surrounding hills create a partial rain-shadow effect. Radar is useful here mainly for tracking the shorter, localized convective showers typical of the region.
