Visakhapatnam sits directly on the Bay of Bengal coast in Andhra Pradesh, making it one of India’s more cyclone-exposed major cities, particularly during the pre-monsoon (April-May) and post-monsoon (October-December) periods when tropical cyclones are most likely to form in the Bay. The city received rainfall from both the southwest and northeast monsoons, and radar and satellite tracking of developing systems out over the Bay is a routine part of local storm preparedness.
