Live Rain Radar for Heraklion, Crete

← Crete, Greece

Heraklion, on the island of Crete, receives around 480 mm (about 19 inches) of rain a year, concentrated almost entirely in autumn and winter with a long, dry, tourist-season summer typical of the eastern Mediterranean. The island’s mountainous interior can intensify autumn storms significantly as moist air is forced upward, occasionally producing flash flooding in the seasonal riverbeds (gorges) that are popular hiking routes but can become dangerous very quickly during heavy rain. Because Crete’s famous gorges turn from dry hiking trails to fast-flowing water with real speed during storms, radar tracking is a genuinely practical safety tool for visitors and locals alike during the wetter months. Greece’s National Meteorological Service operates the regional radar network.
