Tartu, in southern Estonia on the Emajõgi river, receives around 650 mm (about 26 inches) of rain a year, similar to Tallinn, with a summer peak from convective storms typical of the region’s climate. The river, which flows toward nearby Lake Peipus, has a generally moderate flow pattern, meaning fast-developing local summer storms represent the more immediate weather hazard rather than large-scale flooding. As Estonia’s main university city, its large student population makes radar a routinely consulted everyday tool for planning outdoor activity around summer storms.
