Brno, in the South Moravian region, receives around 490 mm (about 19 inches) of rain a year, similar to Prague, with a clear summer peak from convective storms typical of central Europe’s continental climate. The city’s gently rolling terrain means water generally drains reasonably well compared with flatter cities, though intense summer downpours can still overwhelm specific low-lying streets. Hail is a recognized risk for the surrounding Moravian wine region during the most severe summer storms. Because these storms can develop quickly on an otherwise dry summer day, radar tracking is a practical tool during the warmer months. The Czech Hydrometeorological Institute operates the national radar network.
