Zenica sits in a valley along the Bosna river in central Bosnia and Herzegovina and receives around 900 mm (about 35 inches) of rain a year, with the surrounding hills helping to intensify rainfall, particularly during spring and early summer. The Bosna river has occasionally flooded parts of the city during periods of sustained heavy rain across the wider watershed, a risk shared with much of the country’s river valley communities. Faster, localized summer thunderstorms are a separate, more immediate hazard, occasionally bringing hail. Because valley terrain here creates such distinct local weather, radar offers a clearer picture than a general regional forecast. Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Hydrometeorological Institute operates the national radar network.
