Live Rain Radar for Dhaka, Dhaka

← Dhaka, Bangladesh

Dhaka sits in one of the most flood-prone regions on Earth, at the heart of the Ganges-Brahmaputra delta, and receives roughly 2,000 mm (about 79 inches) of rain a year, with the overwhelming majority falling during the monsoon season from June to September. The city’s low, flat elevation, combined with the convergence of major rivers nearby, means that both direct monsoon rainfall and upstream river flooding can inundate large parts of the city for extended periods each year. Rapid, unplanned urban growth has also reduced the natural wetlands and canals that once helped absorb excess water, making drainage slower than it used to be. Intense monsoon downpours can flood streets within an hour, stranding commuters and disrupting daily life across the metro area. Because monsoon rainfall intensity varies so much day to day, radar tracking is an important practical tool for residents and disaster-management authorities alike. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department operates the country’s weather radar network.
