Bratislava sits on the Danube at the western edge of Slovakia and receives around 600 mm (about 24 inches) of rain a year, with a summer peak from convective storms typical of the wider Danube basin shared with neighboring Austria and Hungary. The river has a documented history of flooding the city during periods of sustained heavy rain across its enormous upstream watershed, prompting significant flood-defense investment along the riverbanks. Faster, more localized summer thunderstorms remain a separate, more immediate hazard for daily life. Because these two risks unfold so differently, radar is most useful for tracking the faster local storms. The Slovak Hydrometeorological Institute operates the national radar network.
