Rijeka, on Croatia’s northern Adriatic coast, is one of the wettest cities in the country, averaging around 1,600 mm (about 63 inches) of rain a year as the nearby mountains force moist Mediterranean air upward and intensify rainfall dramatically compared with other Croatian coastal cities. Intense storms are common, particularly in autumn, and can trigger fast-moving flash floods and landslides on the steep terrain surrounding the port city. As a major shipping hub, sudden weather shifts here carry real operational significance. Because the mountain-coast combination creates such sharp local rainfall intensity, radar is a genuinely important practical tool rather than a supplementary one. Croatia’s DHMZ operates the national radar network.
