Pécs, in southern Hungary near the Mecsek hills, receives around 640 mm (about 25 inches) of rain a year, among the wetter parts of the country thanks to its position at the northern edge of a more Mediterranean-influenced climate zone extending up from the Balkans. Summer storms here can be intense, occasionally bringing hail that affects the region’s well-known vineyards. The surrounding hills add a degree of local variability to exactly where the heaviest rain falls on a given day compared with Hungary’s flatter regions. Because of this terrain-driven variability, radar tracking gives residents a more precise real-time picture than the general forecast. Hungary’s Meteorological Service operates the national radar network.
