Live Rain Radar for Helsinki, Uusimaa

← Uusimaa, Finland

Helsinki, on Finland’s southern coast facing the Gulf of Finland, receives around 660 mm (about 26 inches) of rain a year, with a clear late-summer peak in July and August driven by convective showers and thunderstorms. Being sheltered somewhat by the Baltic Sea rather than facing the open Atlantic, Helsinki sees less frequent, less intense rain than Norway’s or Scotland’s west coasts. Short, sharp summer downpours are the main source of sudden heavy rainfall, occasionally causing localized flooding on specific streets. Because Finnish summers can shift quickly from clear to stormy on a warm afternoon, radar remains a useful practical tool during the warmer months. Finland’s Meteorological Institute operates the national radar network.
