Toulouse, in southwestern France, receives about 650 mm (roughly 26 inches) of rain a year, with a relatively even spread across the seasons and a tendency toward intense thunderstorms in late spring and summer as warm air moves up from the Mediterranean and Atlantic. The Garonne river running through the city has occasionally flooded during periods of prolonged heavy rain, most notably in historic floods, though the city’s infrastructure has since been substantially reinforced. Hail is a notable risk during the most intense summer storms in this part of France. Because these storms can build quickly over a normally dry stretch, radar tracking gives useful lead time. Météo-France operates the regional radar network.
