Radar is the most honest weather tool you have — it shows what is actually happening, not what a model predicted. But its honesty comes with a short shelf life: a radar image tells you about the next one to two hours, not the whole day. Knowing when to check it is the difference between staying dry and being caught mid-downpour.

Use the forecast for planning your day, and the radar for the final call. The most valuable window to check a rain radar is 30 to 90 minutes before you head outside. That is close enough that the storms on the map are the storms that will actually reach you, yet far enough ahead to change your plans. Checking the night before tells you almost nothing — showers visible on radar rarely survive more than a couple of hours.
The Right Timing for Each Situation
The night before: use the forecast, not the radar
A storm that will hit you tomorrow afternoon usually does not exist yet. Radar cannot show storms that have not formed, so use a forecast for anything beyond about two hours — then confirm with radar on the day.
60–90 minutes before leaving: the first serious look
Open the live rain map and look upwind of your location — the direction weather usually arrives from (west in most mid-latitude countries). Rain sitting 50–80 km upwind will typically arrive in one to two hours.
15–30 minutes before: the final check
Play the radar loop. If the nearest cells are moving toward you and are within 20–30 km, you have roughly half an hour. If the loop shows cells repeatedly forming over the same spot (“training”), expect the rain to last longer than a single cell suggests.
During a storm warning: check every 10–15 minutes

How to Read the Loop Like a Forecaster
A single still image can mislead; always animate the last hour. Three things matter: direction (project the motion forward — will the cell’s path cross yours?), trend (are the cores brightening toward orange and red, or fading? see Rain Radar Colors Explained), and speed (a cell that crossed half the screen in an hour will cover the remaining distance proportionally fast). Storms also intensify in the afternoon heating peak, so a weak morning echo can become a strong evening one along the same track.
