Herceg Novi, at the entrance to the Bay of Kotor on Montenegro’s Adriatic coast, receives around 1,900 mm (about 75 inches) of rain a year, among the wettest coastal cities in the Mediterranean, as the surrounding mountains force moist sea air upward dramatically close to shore. Autumn and winter bring the most intense storms, sometimes producing extreme short-term rainfall totals and flash flooding in the steep terrain surrounding the bay. As a popular tourist destination, sudden shifts in weather matter for the local seasonal economy. Because this coast is genuinely one of Europe’s wettest stretches, radar tracking is a routinely useful tool here. Montenegro’s Hydrometeorological Service operates the national radar network.
