Tetovo, close to the Šar Mountains in northwestern North Macedonia, is notably wetter than much of the rest of the country, receiving around 750 mm (about 30 inches) of rain a year as the nearby high mountains force moist air upward and intensify rainfall. Summer convective storms here can be intense, occasionally triggering localized flash flooding and landslide risk on the steep slopes surrounding the city. Because mountain terrain here creates such sharp local variation in rainfall compared with the flatter Pelagonia plain further south, radar is genuinely more useful than a broad national forecast. North Macedonia’s Hydrometeorological Service operates the national radar network.
