Panevėžys, in northern-central Lithuania, receives around 630 mm (about 25 inches) of rain a year, with a summer peak from convective storms typical of the wider Baltic region’s climate. The Nevėžis river running through the city has a generally modest flow, meaning fast-developing local summer storms represent the more immediate weather hazard rather than large-scale flooding. Hail is a recognized risk for the surrounding farmland during the most intense cells. Because these storms can develop quickly on an otherwise calm summer day, radar tracking remains a practical tool for residents and farmers alike. Lithuania’s Hydrometeorological Service operates the national radar network.
