Live Rain Radar for Kranj, Upper Carniola

← Upper Carniola, Slovenia

Kranj, close to the Julian Alps in northwestern Slovenia, is one of the wettest parts of the country, receiving around 1,500 mm (about 59 inches) of rain a year as the surrounding high mountains force moist air upward dramatically. The Sava river running through the city has occasionally flooded during periods of intense mountain rainfall, and the steep surrounding terrain also creates landslide risk during the heaviest events. Summer convective storms build quickly against the mountain backdrop most afternoons during the warmer months. Because mountain terrain here creates such sharp and fast-changing local weather, radar tracking is especially valuable compared with flatter regions. Slovenia’s ARSO operates the national radar network.
