Iligan sits in Mindanao, which lies south of the Philippines’ main typhoon belt and sees far fewer direct typhoon strikes than Luzon or the Visayas, though the island still receives substantial rainfall from the monsoon and occasional tropical storms that do reach this far south.
In Northern Mindanao near Cagayan de Oro, the city was also severely affected by the 2011 Washi floods along its river systems.
