Rajkot sits in the drier Saurashtra region of Gujarat, where annual rainfall is lower and more variable than in the rest of the state, arriving almost entirely during the June-September southwest monsoon. Because the region depends heavily on monsoon rainfall for its reservoirs and groundwater recharge, a single strong spell can matter more here than in wetter parts of India. Radar is particularly useful in Saurashtra for spotting whether an approaching band will actually reach a given district, since rainfall here can be noticeably patchy.
