Dambulla sits in Sri Lanka’s central highlands, where elevation and exposure to both monsoon seasons combine to produce some of the island’s heaviest rainfall totals.
At the edge of the central highlands, the town sits in a transition zone between the wetter hills and the drier north-central plains.
