Bolzano sits in Italy’s northeastern Alpine foothills, one of the wettest and most flash-flood-prone parts of the country, where moist air is forced upward over the mountains and produces some of Italy’s heaviest rainfall totals.
At the confluence of the Isarco and Adige rivers in the Alps, the city monitors both rivers closely during periods of heavy mountain rainfall. Steep valleys and fast-flowing mountain rivers mean a single intense storm can raise water levels dangerously within a very short time, making radar tracking of individual storm cells especially important here.
