Part of the Dhaka metropolitan area, the city’s Turag River can rise quickly during intense monsoon downpours. Because the Ganges, Brahmaputra, and Meghna rivers all drain vast catchments across the Himalayas and northern India before reaching Bangladesh, a wet monsoon far upstream can raise water levels here even without heavy local rain, and Bangladesh’s Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre uses radar alongside river gauges to track both direct rainfall and the rivers’ slower, larger rises.
