Trento sits in Italy’s northeastern Alpine foothills, one of the wettest and most flash-flood-prone parts of the country, where moist air is forced upward over the mountains and produces some of Italy’s heaviest rainfall totals.
In a narrow Alpine valley along the Adige River, the city’s steep surrounding terrain can send heavy rain into the valley floor very quickly. Steep valleys and fast-flowing mountain rivers mean a single intense storm can raise water levels dangerously within a very short time, making radar tracking of individual storm cells especially important here.
