Pärnu, a popular Estonian seaside resort city on the Gulf of Riga, receives around 700 mm (about 28 inches) of rain a year, with coastal exposure adding variability compared with more inland Estonian cities. As a major summer beach destination, sudden shifts from clear skies to rain matter for the local tourism economy during the short Baltic summer. Coastal storms can bring strong winds and, in the most severe cases, storm surge that has historically affected the low-lying areas near the Pärnu river mouth. Because weather along this coast can change quickly, radar tracking is a genuinely practical tool for both residents and visitors. Estonia’s Environment Agency operates the national radar network.
